There's something magical about foggy mornings. The air is still and quiet, and the world feels like it's blanketed in a dream. It's the perfect time to take photographs. The soft light is flattering to everything it touches, and there's a sense of mystery in the fog that can't be captured at any other time of day. Of course, foggy mornings are also notoriously fleeting. The fog can burn off quickly, so it's important to be up early if you want to capture it. But for me, it's worth sacrificing a few hours of sleep to experience the beauty of a foggy morning.
As I approach the lake in the Japanese Garden at Dawes Arboretum, I can see the glassy smooth water reflecting the bare trees and small island with wooden bridge. The soft light from the fog is a bit eerie but romantic. I can hear the sound of raindrops gently falling and feel a little bit of a drizzle on my face. It's a typical early winter day in Central Ohio.
Visualizing this picture, I knew immediately that I wanted to convert it to black and white. The monochromatic effect creates a moodiness and depth that can be difficult to achieve with color photography. Plus, I love the way all tones from solid black to pure white are represented in this image. It really allows the shadows and highlights to stand out. There's also something about black and white photography that brings out the texture of a scene in a way that color can't. The contrast between light and dark accentuates the cragginess of rocks, the softness of pine needles, and the shimmering of water. It's as if the world is rendered in greater detail, and we can see things we've never noticed before. Whether it's the roughness of a mountain range or the delicate patterns of a snowflake, black and white photography allows us to appreciate the world around us in all its texture and depth.
